Does Puerto Rico have true all-inclusive resorts?
There are no true all-inclusive resorts in Puerto Rico like those that can be found in the rest of the Caribbean and Mexico. Some of the Puerto Rico resorts offer packages that include breakfast and activities, but you will not find a resort that includes everything you find at an all-inclusive hotel.
However, many of the beach resort properties have several on-site restaurants, multiple pools, and spas, making it feel like an all-inclusive experience.
What part of Puerto Rico is best for families?
The majority of people traveling to Puerto Rico will stay in San Juan, and the surrounding areas of Isla Verde and Condado. These destinations offer easy access to most of the family-friendly activities in Puerto Rico.
Other areas that families will enjoy include: Rio Grande, Dorado, Luquillo, Fajardo, Ponce, Rincón, Culebra, and Vieques.
Best Puerto Rico Hotels for Families
Hotels in Old San Juan
Hotel El Convento
Centrally located in Old San Juan, this hotel has a rich history and killer views of the city from it’s rooftop. It’s must more of a boutique hotel, offering easy access to everything the city has to offer.
Guest rooms come in a variety of options. We like the junior suites for families.
There’s a small rooftop plunge pool and jacuzzi, a fitness center, and access to a private beach, El Convento Beach Club.
Guests can experience fine dining any time of day at the property’s restaurants. The hotel’s central location allows guests to see the majority of San Juan’s attractions by foot.
Puerto Rico Beach Resorts in Condado
The Condado neighborhood is where you will find many high-end resorts just outside of Old San Juan.
There’s shopping, some of the best restaurants in the city, and boutiques all within walking distance of most Condado properties. Many families enjoy staying in this area as it provides easy access to Old San Juan.
Even though this property was severely damaged by Hurricane Maria, it has completely recovered. The resort occupies an enviable location between Old San Juan and Condado Beach with a secluded beach adjacent to Condado Lagoon.
Rooms have either pool or ocean views, and the whole family can be comfortable in one of the double bedrooms.
There are plenty of amenities for families: tennis courts, a spa, a fitness center, a kids’ playground, an infinity pool, two additional swimming pools, and a splash pad.
Caribe Hilton has six restaurants (including a Morton’s Steak House), several bars, an ice cream and cookie shop, and a Starbucks for that morning pick me up.
Condado Vanderbilt Hotel
Condado Vanderbilt is a popular choice with families due to their high end service and kid-friendly amenities. This property sits right on the beach and has two guest towers.
The Beach tower has two pools, whereas the Spa Tower has an infinity pool with a sundeck and beautiful views over the Atlantic Ocean. Guests will love having a pool and beach butler available at both.
Families will be comfortable in a two queen room, or might prefer to book one of the luxurious suites (available with one or two bedrooms). Other amenities include a spa and fitness center, five restaurants, and two bars.
La Concha Renaissance San Juan Hotel
La Concha resort is easily recognized by its iconic seashell building along the beach.
Families will love the comfortable rooms and suites, multiple swimming pools, and several restaurants to choose from at mealtime.
There’s also a fitness center and spa, and golf is available at one of their sister properties.
San Juan Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino
We’ve stayed here several times and love the location of this Puerto Rico resort. The property has beautiful pools and a waterslide, and it’s right on the beach.
An added bonus is the Stellaris casino with slot machines and table games. Note: the casino is separate from the rest of the property so families won’t even see it unless they go looking for it.
Families can book either a city-view or ocean-view room, and all rooms have a private balcony. Ask for a room on a higher floor so your view isn’t blocked by palm trees.
There are five restaurants on-site, a grab and go café, and two bars (one inside, the other poolside). If you don’t want to eat on property, there are plenty of restaurants in the surrounding area.
Isla Verde Resorts
Fairmont El San Juan Hotel
The Fairmont is located on Isla Verde beach (one of the best beaches in Puerto Rico for families), about 20-minutes driving from Old San Juan.
Families can enjoy the beach, a full service spa, tennis courts, a basketball court, and several swimming pools. At the Functional Fitness Sky Lab, parents and older teens can try TRX, yoga, and other fitness classes.
Accommodation options include traditional rooms, suites, and even villas for families who need extra space. Villas include airport transportation, personalized service, and exclusive amenities.
There are nine restaurants and four bars on the property, so you never have to leave. Some say this is the best resort for a family vacation in Puerto Rico.
Beach Resorts in Dorado
Dorado Beach, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve
Located in Dorado, about 30 minutes from Old San Juan, this Ritz property in Puerto Rico sits on a pristine, tropical nature reserve. The resort has a spectacular swimmable private beach, gorgeous pool area, and fabulous kids’ program.
There are rooms, suites, and residences available for families. They have all of the luxurious amenities you would expect from a Ritz resort.
Just beyond the outdoor swimming pool is a man-made lagoon that is perfect for swimming with small kids. Another beach is home to all of the water sports, such as surfing, kayaking, and paddle boarding.
There’s a waterpark on the property, The Watermill, complete with water slides, and we’re sure kids will love it.
Active families can play a round of golf at one of the two championship golf courses, play a game of tennis, or borrow bikes to explore the property.
There are three restaurants on site, and a gourmet shop serving coffee and sweet treats. This Puerto Rico resort does not disappoint.
Family-friendly Beach Resorts in Rio Mar
St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort
St Regis Bahia Beach Resort is located in Rio Mar, a 30-45 minute drive from the airport. This makes it closer to El Yunque rainforest, Luquillo Beach, and the bioluminescent bay, but farther from Old San Juan.
Hotel rooms come as garden or ocean view, each with a balcony. There are suites available and even ocean front four bedroom penthouse residences.
This luxury resort has it all. There’s swimming pools, golf, tennis, paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. Parents will love the wellness center and Iridium spa. Childcare is available upon request.
There are only two restaurants and one bar on property, so it’s recommended to have a car when staying here in case you want to explore the area.
Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve
Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve is also in Rio Mar, providing easy access to the rainforest and other outdoor adventures in Puerto Rico.
Rooms and suites have a balcony or terrace overlooking the resort’s gardens, pools, or ocean. Guests will love the meticulous grounds and welcoming staff.

There are three restaurants at Hyatt: a steakhouse, continental, and Asian cuisine (with teppanyaki). This is a great place for families to spend their Puerto Rico vacation.
Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Golf & Beach Resort
Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Golf & Beach Resort comes pretty close to being an all-inclusive resort in Puerto Rico. This beachfront property has over 500 acres to explore and what feels like a week’s worth of activities to keep families entertained.
Rooms and suites have a variety of views: pool, ocean, rainforest, and resort. Each one has a private balcony or terrace. Ocean Family Suites come with a king bed, a sleeper sofa in the living room, and bunk beds. It’s the perfect set up for families.
Note: there is also a Margaritaville Vacation Club within the resort that would be great for families. The accommodation options include everything from studios to three bedroom units. Each one has a mini kitchen and private balcony or patio.
There is an array of activities to keep all ages happy. Kids can spend all day swimming in the lagoon like pools or playing on the beach.

The property has six restaurants on-site. One is a designated breakfast spot and another is a grab-and-go.
Fajardo Beach resort for families
El Conquistador Resort
El Conquistador is located in Fajardo, about an hour from the San Juan airport. This hotel was destroyed by Hurricane Maria, but re-opened in 2021. Before the hurricane, it was considered one of the best family resorts in Puerto Rico, and I assume they’re working to regain their status.
There are a variety of room choices at the hotel, each with an ocean view. Rooms offer two doubles or a king size bed, but there are also one and two bedroom suites.
Families looking for additional space should stay at Las Casitas Village, just above the main property. In addition to one, two, or three bedroom villas, the village also has two private pools and a Spanish tapas restaurant. You still have access to the amenities of the main resort.
The property has it’s own private island, Palomino Island, perfect for a day on the beach. They also have an awesome waterpark complete with a lazy river, waterslide, and massive infinity pool. Kids of all ages will love it. Tennis, golf, and a fitness center are available as well.
El Conquistador has five restaurants, so families can enjoy the resort and never have to leave. It’s the perfect place for a Puerto Rico vacation.
Puerto Rico Family Resorts Outside of the San Juan area
If you are looking to visit Puerto Rico and avoid any of the heavily touristed areas, you’ll want to explore outside of San Juan and the beaches along the north and north east coast.
We recommend renting a car so you can have a better experience, and see everything the Island of Enchantment has to offer.
Puerto Rico Beach Hotels in Isabela
Isabela is in the north west corner of Puerto Rico, about an hour and 45 minutes from the San Juan airport. Here you will find beautiful beaches (good for snorkeling and surfing), the Guajataca forest, and an opportunity to learn more about the local culture.
Villa Montaña Beach Resort
Villa Montana is a great choice for a Puerto Rico family vacation. The property has gold sand beaches on one side and jungle on the other. If you’re wanting a place to get away, this resort fits the bill.
Families can choose from traditional rooms or 1, 2, or 3 bedroom villas. The villas have private patios and terraces and a kitchen, but if you don’t want to cook you can enjoy the stunning farm to table restaurant on property or request in-villa dining.
The resort has two swimming pools, complimentary bicycles, and snorkeling equipment to use at their beach. Additional activities include fishing, horseback riding, golf, tennis, and a playground for children.
If your family surfs, there is easy access to some of the best surfing on the island, just 15 minutes down the road. There is plenty to keep families entertained at Villa Montaña.
Family friendly hotels near Ponce
There are a couple properties we recommend along the southern coast of Puerto Rico, near Ponce, the second largest city in Puerto Rico. These are anywhere from 1.5 to 2 hours from the San Juan airport. There is a small airport in Ponce, and some carriers fly direct from the United States.
Copamarina Beach Resort and Spa is located in Guánica, just west of Ponce. The resort offers vacation packages with some food and beverages included, which might be perfect for families wanting an all-inclusive resort in Puerto Rico.
The resort has three types of accommodations: traditional rooms, suites, and luxury villas. Most have private balconies and ocean or resort views. Villas come with a chef’s kitchen, three bedrooms, two baths, and a home theater system. Be warned, your kids may never want to leave!
There are many activities to choose from: paddle boarding or kayaking, volleyball, bike rides, tennis, a children’s playground, and of course the beach and two swimming pools. There are even Hobie cats to rent and an evening cruise available right from the Copamarina beach.
If you don’t want to eat at one of the local restaurants, there are two excellent choices on the property; Restaurante Alexandra and Las Palmas Restaurant.
Puerto Rico has a variety of accommodations for families from guest houses to chain hotels to boutique properties. Whatever your family is looking for we are sure you will find it in beautiful Puerto Rico!

We regularly used companies like Viator and GetYourGuide to book tours when we travel. Both have great communication and a large variety of activities that work for all ages.

One of our favorite things to do annually is take photos with Flytographer. They have photographers around the world and we’ve used them on four separate occasions. This is our favorite travel souvenir.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance
With the state of travel these days, it’s important to have some type of travel insurance to cover any unforeseen accidents, illnesses, threat or cancellations. We always travel with insurance and would recommend SquareMouth, Travelex, or Medjet as good options. And if you want to compare different insurance options, use Travel Insurance Master to find the best policy for your group.
