Houston is a year-round destination, but the climate is something families should plan around carefully. The city is known for heat, humidity, and occasional stormy weather.

Spring is arguably the best time to visit, as temperatures sit comfortably in the 70s°F, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is in full swing. Summer is hot and humid with highs above 95°F, but there are plenty of air-conditioned museums and indoor attractions that make it very manageable for families. Fall and winter brings cooler weather and smaller crowds, and December offers mild temperatures, cheaper travel, and magical holiday displays at the Houston Zoo.

How to Get to Houston

By Air: Houston is served by two major airports. George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is the larger of the two and is located about 23 miles north of downtown. It’s a major hub with excellent domestic and international connections. William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) is closer to the city and is primarily served by Southwest Airlines. 

By Car: Houston is easily accessible by car via several major interstates, including I-10 (east–west), I-45 (north–south), and I-69. It’s a popular Texas road trip destination. Be aware that Houston traffic can be challenging, so use a navigation app and try to avoid rush hours.

By Bus: Greyhound, Flixbus, and several other intercity coaches serve Houston from Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, and other major Texas cities. This is an affordable option for budget-conscious families.

How to Get Around Houston

Houston is one of the largest cities by area in the United States, and a car or rideshare is the most practical way to get around with children. That said, there are some good transportation options for families.

Car/Rideshare: Uber and Lyft are widely available throughout the city. Parking is generally plentiful and affordable compared to many major US cities.

METRORail: Houston’s light rail connects the Museum District, Downtown, and Midtown. This makes it easy to explore the city’s core cultural attractions without a car. The Museum District stop puts you within easy reach of the Houston Museum of Natural Science, Children’s Museum, and Houston Zoo.

On Foot: The Museum District and Hermann Park area are very walkable. Downtown Houston also has some nice areas around Market Square Park and Discovery Green.

1. Space Center Houston

Space Center Houston is an absolute must for families. It’s consistently chosen as one of the top attractions in the country. NASA’s official visitor center, located at the Johnson Space Center, is a hit with parents and kids alike.

Kids can touch a real moon rock, see actual spacecraft and Mission Control, explore interactive exhibits about space exploration, and possibly see astronauts training. The tram tour of the Mission Control room and the Saturn V rocket building is a highlight.

Tip: Book tickets online in advance and arrive early. Space Center Houston deserves a full day. Check the website for upcoming events, including astronaut appearances and rocket launches viewable from the site.

2. Houston Museum of Natural Science

The Houston Museum of Natural Science is one of the top natural history museums in the U.S., and families love it. The permanent collection includes a world-class Hall of Palaeontology packed with dinosaur skeletons, a gem and mineral hall, an ancient Egyptian exhibit, and the Cockrell Butterfly Center, which houses hundreds of live butterflies.

The museum’s planetarium and IMAX Theatre offer incredible shows that kids will love. Plan on at least three to four hours for your visit.

9. Kemah Boardwalk

About 30 miles southeast of Houston on Galveston Bay, Kemah Boardwalk is a lively waterfront entertainment complex that families adore. 11. Houston Arboretum & Nature Center

12. SlooMoo Institute

The SlooMoo Institute is a multi-story interactive slime experience that kids absolutely go wild for. Spread across several floors, it’s filled with slime-themed rooms, activities, and hands-on stations where children can make, touch, and play with slime of every imaginable color and texture. There are also enormous ball pits and giant slides, it’s pure, messy fun. We think it’s perfect for younger kids and a great rainy day option.

Book tickets in advance as it gets busy on the weekends, and dress the kids in clothes you don’t mind getting messy.

13. Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern

For something unique, head to Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern. This vast, abandoned underground water reservoir (built in 1926 and hidden beneath Buffalo Bayou Park) is one of Houston’s most memorable attractions.

Guided tours lead families down into the cavernous space, where 221 columns stretch into the darkness, and the shallow water on the floor creates perfect mirror reflections of the pillars above. It’s absolutely fascinating. The cistern occasionally hosts immersive art installations that make it even more spectacular. Check the website for current exhibitions before you visit.

Best Parks in Houston for Kids

Hermann Park

As described above, Hermann Park is Houston’s premier family park with the zoo, lake, miniature train, gardens, and free outdoor theatre all in one place. It’s a great place to take the kids on a Houston visit. 

Memorial Park

Memorial Park is a beloved Houston institution. It offers extensive trails, tennis courts, a swimming pool, an arboretum, and the excellent Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens. It’s wonderful for active families who want to run, cycle, and explore.

Discovery Green

Discovery Green downtown offers free outdoor concerts, movies, a lake, a dog park, and regular family events. It’s conveniently located next to the George R. Brown Convention Center and is well connected by METRORail.

Splash Pads

Houston’s heat makes splash pads an essential part of any summer visit, and the city has some excellent ones dotted throughout its parks. Discovery Green’s splash pad is one of the most central and popular. Levy Park in Upper Kirby has a splash area alongside playgrounds and food trucks. Exploration Green in Clear Lake features a large splash pad surrounded by beautiful nature trails.

Most of Houston’s major neighborhood parks also have free splash pad facilities. These are a lifesaver on a hot Texas afternoon.

Where to Eat in Houston with Kids

Houston is widely regarded as one of the best food cities in the United States, with a diverse culinary scene. Families have plenty of options.

Tex-Mex: Houston Tex-Mex is some of the finest in Texas, and that’s saying something. Ninfa’s on Navigation is the restaurant where the fajita, as we know i,t was invented, and the atmosphere is festive and family-friendly. 

BBQ: No Houston food experience is complete without Texas BBQ. Truth BBQ is one of the very best in the state, with slow-smoked brisket, ribs, and sausage that will convert reluctant meat-eaters. Lines can be long, so arrive early or go on a weekday.

Another Houston BBQ institution, Goode Company, has been serving smoked meats, jalapeño cheese bread, and pecan pie since 1977. It’s laid-back, affordable, and a perfect lunch spot for spending time at Hermann Park.

Pho Saigon: Houston has one of the largest Vietnamese-American communities in the United States, and the city’s Vietnamese food is extraordinary. Pho Saigon is a local favorite for generous, warming bowls of pho that kids tend to love.

Food Trucks: Houston has one of the most vibrant food truck scenes in the United States, and it’s a fantastic way to introduce kids to the city’s extraordinary culinary diversity without the formality of a sit-down restaurant. Truck Yard on Lamar Street in Midtown is a great spot for families to graze their way through tacos, Korean BBQ, loaded fries, craft ice cream, and much more. 

2 Days in Houston Itinerary

Day 1: Space Center & Kemah Boardwalk

Morning: Head straight to Space Center Houston and plan to spend most of the morning and early afternoon there. It deserves at least four to five hours. Buy tickets online in advance. Don’t miss the tram tour to the Saturn V rocket hall and historic Mission Control.

Lunch: Grab lunch at Space Center Houston’s on-site café, or bring your own food and eat at one of their picnic tables.

Afternoon/Evening: After the Space Center, drive about 15 minutes south to Kemah Boardwalk for an afternoon of rides, waterfront dining, and carnival fun. In summer, the evening fireworks over the bay shouldn’t be missed. It’s the perfect way to wind down an action-packed day.

Day 2: Museum District, Hermann Park & Downtown

Morning: Arrive at the Houston Museum of Natural Science when it opens. Budget two to three hours for the dinosaur hall, gem collection, and butterfly center. Then walk across to Children’s Museum Houston for an hour or two of hands-on fun.

Lunch: Pack a picnic and head to Hermann Park. Take the miniature train around the park after lunch.

Afternoon: Spend the afternoon at the Houston Zoo, which is just a short walk through the park. Two to three hours gives you a comfortable pace to see the highlights.

Evening: Head downtown to Discovery Green for a free outdoor concert or movie screening. Finish with dinner at one of the restaurants around the park, or walk to the Downtown Aquarium.

Day Trips from Houston with Kids

Even though Houston is a family-friendly destination, it’s the perfect home base for day trips across the region. Here are the best:

Galveston Island

Just 50 miles southeast of Houston, Galveston is the classic Houston day trip for families. The historic city sits on a barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico, and its wide sandy beaches, warm water, and cheerful boardwalk atmosphere make it a win-win for the whole family.

Beyond the beach, Galveston’s Pleasure Pier offers thrilling amusement rides right over the water, and the Moody Gardens complex features a rainforest pyramid, discovery museum, and waterpark all in one. The Strand Historic District is wonderful for a stroll, with candy shops, ice cream parlors, and excellent seafood restaurants.

Drive time from Houston is about an hour. Go on a weekday in summer to avoid the weekend crowds.

San Antonio

About three hours west of Houston by car, San Antonio is one of the best family destinations in the United States. The iconic Alamo, Riverwalk, and Six Flags Fiesta Texas make it worth more than a day trip, but it’s very doable in a day if you prefer.

Austin

Austin is about two and a half hours northwest of Houston and an excellent family day trip or overnight. Highlights for kids include Barton Springs Pool (a natural spring-fed swimming hole in the heart of the city), the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, South Congress Avenue for food and shopping, and the nightly bat colony emerging from the Congress Avenue Bridge at dusk.

Brazos Bend State Park

Just 45 minutes southwest of Houston, Brazos Bend State Park is an escape that families with a sense of adventure will love. The park is home to American alligators, and the guided nature walks and star-gazing programs at the on-site observatory are fabulous. It’s affordable, easy to reach, and unlike anything else near the city.
