This summer we took a road trip from Chicago to Door County, Wisconsin in a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL in search of some must see sights. We were pleasantly surprised by what we found along the way. The area has endless opportunities for outdoor adventures, delicious local food, and a rich history, but the Mitsubishi Outlander SEL made the ride extremely comfortable. Fasten your seatbelts, we’re sharing what we found and what we loved about the Mitsubishi Outlander SEL.
Wisconsin Road Trip with the Mitsubishi Outlander SEL
What is the Mitsubishi Outlander SEL?
The Mitsubishi Outlander SEL is a four door SUV that can seat seven people (2 front, 3 middle, 2 back). There were just three of us traveling, so we had the third row folded down and had plenty of storage space for our luggage. The vehicle’s leather seats and easy to use dashboard display (there’s a 7” touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), make it very comfortable for long drives. It also has great safety features including a multi-view camera system, Forward Collision Mitigation, and lane change assist, making it a perfect road trip vehicle.
Where to stop in Door County?
Our first stop was Sturgeon Bay, located at the southern end of the Door County Peninsula. There’s a charming downtown area and beautiful waterfront for sunset strolls. Visitors can rent kayaks and paddle boards at Bay Shore Outfitters, grab a bite to eat at the Inn at Cedar Crossing, and visit the Door County Maritime Museum. We did everything but the kayaks because we ran out of time. Sturgeon Bay is a great introduction to Door County.
Baileys Harbor is the perfect spot for heading outdoors. We went zip lining at Lakeshore Adventures, then took a hike at The Ridges Sanctuary, where they have 30 acres to explore. After lunch at the Harbor Fish Market & Grille we headed to Cana Island lighthouse. The lighthouse can be reached on foot (at low tide) or by tractor (at all times) because you have to cross over a causeway to reach the island. Climb the 97 steps to the top to see Lake Michigan and the rest of the island. It’s worth it!
Washington Island was a fun excursion because the Mitsubishi Outlander SEL got to take a ferry ride. I had never driven a car onto a ferry before and it was quite an adventure. Once we arrived on Washington Island we explored Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm, where the kids cut their own lavender, and went swimming at Schoolhouse Beach. Schoolhouse Beach has the clearest water I’ve ever seen, no sand, just limestone pebbles. The kids never wanted to leave!
Door County Orchards
Door County has orchards for all seasons, and we were lucky to visit during cherry season. Everywhere we drove there were places to pick your own cherries. We stopped at Lautenbach’s Orchard Country Market & Winery, where we were able to pick a couple of baskets to take home. The experience was quintessential Door County!
Drive-In Movie Theatre
While driving around the peninsula we saw the Skyway Drive-In Theatre, and knew we had to have a movie night. We drove the Mitsubishi Outlander SEL to the theater and arrived early so we had a good spot for the show. We were able to fold down the second and third rows and spread out our pillows and blankets for a comfy evening under the stars. It was one of our favorite evenings in the area.
The Mitsubishi Outlander SEL 2.4 Fine Details
- Compared to many SUVs, the Mitsubishi Outlander SEL gets great gas mileage, 24 city/29 highway. We traveled quite a bit throughout the peninsula and only stopped for gas once.
- Standard features on this model include leather seats, an eight way power adjustable driver’s seat (very comfortable I might add), the 7” touch screen display audio system, power remote lift gate, dual zone climate control, and silver roof rails.
- Additional safety features: Rear cross traffic alert, blind spot warning, and forward collision mitigation.
- The vehicle has a 5 year/60,000 mile basic warranty and a 10 year/100,000 mile limited powertrain warranty
Our Mitsubishi Outlander took us through small lakeside towns, cherry orchards, farm communities, to an island, and spectacular Wisconsin scenery. We rode in comfort the entire way and enjoyed listening to our favorite songs on the Rockford Fosgate sound system, using the easy to read (and navigate) radio display and multi-view camera system, and all of the vehicle’s safety features. As a mom, safety comes first and this SUV has all the bells and whistles. We thought our road trip in the Mitsubishi Outlander SEL was fantastic, and we would definitely take it for another spin.
