Tired of trying to find the perfect restaurant for your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day? Why not skip the fancy restaurant and consider a Valentine’s Day picnic instead? Whether you want to arrange for a night away at a local hotel or simply snuggle by the fire after the kids are in bed, this easy to plan meal will have your significant other singing your praises.
How to Pack the Perfect Valentine’s Day Picnic
1. Don’t forget the basics: utensils, plates, and napkins
This is almost too easy to forget. Throw in some disposable Valentine’s day themed plates, napkins, and utensils or you’ll be eating everything with your hands. This is definitely not the best way to start a romantic evening.
2. Keep the food simple
The perfect picnic basket in our house includes a baguette, crackers, salami or prosciutto, cheese, grapes, and an apple. Nothing requires refrigeration, but we could throw in an ice pack to keep everything cold. If you decide to pack sandwiches or salads, don’t forget the condiments as well as salt and pepper.
3. Don’t forget drinks and dessert
Obviously this is the most important part! When I think Valentine’s Day, I think red wine. That’s why Josh Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon is the perfect choice for a picnic basket. Of course you’ll need wine glasses so don’t forget those, and what goes better with wine than chocolate? I’m loving the Valentine’s collection from Ghirardelli with several flavor combinations to choose from. I couldn’t choose a favorite, so I’ll be throwing a bag of the Valentine’s Chocolate Assortment and the Valentine’s Impressions from Walmart into our basket. I’m sure we will have to sample some from both of them.
4. Bring the right tools along
You will definitely need a cork screw to open the wine and a knife to cut the bread, salami, and cheese. Throw in a small cutting board too. Forget these items and you may be eating cave man style!
If you’re planning on spreading out on the floor, bring a blanket to lay out. You may even want to bring some candles and matches to add some ambience to the picnic. That’s what I call romance!
5. Make clean up easy
Bring along some small trash bags, paper towels, and hand wipes for easy clean up. Relax and enjoy another glass of your Josh Cellars wine. Cheers!
